Um Abdu’s brother was tragically shot and killed in the war. When asked of the impact the Syrian war has had on her life, she expresses, “I am choking inside….I’ve lost my father, mother and brother.”
She nearly lost one of her daughters on the rough, chaotic trek to Jordan and tears up recounting the unimaginable fear that followed the separation. Um Abdu remembers reuniting, “We held her and cried and joy returned.”
Upon arriving in Jordan, struggles continued. Her husband found little work. Providing basic necessities became increasingly difficult. At one point, even Um Abdu’s 11-year-old was forced to try to find a job. Then Um Abdu joined the knitters. She smiles, “The knitting project is allowing us to move forward…thank you.”
