As violence escalated, Um Obeyda and her husband agreed he should flee Syria to seek refuge in Jordan. Left in Syria with her children and a newborn baby, Um Obeyda attempted several times to make the harrowing journey into Jordan. After numerous failed attempts, a local driver was finally able to bring them safely through the border.
Though reunited with her husband, Um Obeyda feels lonely without her extended Syrian family. She has, however, found support through the knitting group and projects an unrivaled sense of resilience. Her mantra “As long as there is life there remains hope”, gives her the determination to face each new day with a spirit of optimism, despite her struggles and uncertainties.
